Biography

Anastasia Klose was born in Melbourne in 1978. She is mostly known for her autobiographical videos and performances. She attended Melbourne University and completed a Bachelor of Arts (English and Philosophy) in 1995, then went to Victorian College of the Arts and completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Drawing (first class Honours) in 2005.

Klose is interested in finding new ways to express the experience of her everyday life. She believes in using herself as a human specimen, and continually looks for ways to translate her own experiences of living into art. Klose’s mother is artist and academic Elizabeth Presa. Sometimes Klose and her mother collaborate together on projects. A sort of relaxed cultural and conceptual exchange occurs naturally between them, and they like to talk to each other about art and ideas at 6am in the morning on the phone, from their respective beds, before they have to get up for work.

Klose has held solo exhibitions at Spacement Gallery, Tolarno Galleries and Gertrude Contemporary. She has also participated in group exhibitions at ACCA, PICA, Goma, Sydney Biennale 2008 Revolutions online, Utopian Slumps, Queensland University and the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane. In 2011, she staged a performance at the Venice Biennale Vernissage as part of ACCA’s pop-up program. Other highlights include inclusion in “Selectively Revealed”, an Asialink exhibition currently touring around Asia, and a month long writing performance (2010) at the Australian Experimental Art Foundation in Adelaide.
